About Me
Many people reach therapy at a point where something in their life or relationships no longer feels sustainable. You may feel stuck in repeating patterns, navigating conflict that never seems to resolve, carrying the weight of stress from work into home life, or trying to rebuild trust after disconnection. These moments can feel overwhelming, but they can also become powerful turning points. I’m Valerie, a Registered Social Worker, Canadian Certified Counsellor, and Registered Clinical Counsellor with advanced training in couples counselling, family counselling, and mediation. I founded Braveheart Counselling & Mediation with the belief that courage in connection—with ourselves and with others—is the foundation for meaningful change. At heart, I’m a lifelong observer of human connection. I believe courage and compassion can coexist—even in conflict—and that lasting change often begins when we understand ourselves more clearly in relationship to others. Over the years, I’ve supported individuals, couples, and families navigating relational burnout, high-conflict dynamics, co-parenting stress, ADHD-related challenges, trauma, and major life transitions. A particular focus of my work is supporting first responders, healthcare professionals, and their families, whose roles often carry significant operational and emotional demands that can follow them home. My goal is not only to support those who serve others, but to help ensure they have a home to come home to. Clients often say they appreciate the mix of reflection and structure in our work. Sessions feel thoughtful, grounded, and forward-moving. Together, we work to understand patterns, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop more effective ways of communicating and relating. My practice integrates Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), all through a trauma-informed and systemic lens. In practice, that means we map patterns, understand what drives them, and practice new ways of relating that feel both authentic and sustainable. Whether you’re steadying yourself through change, navigating repetitive conflict, rebuilding trust in a relationship, or seeking calmer co-parenting dynamics, our work centers on strengthening your capacity for courage, clarity, and meaningful connection. I work with individuals, couples, and families in person in Calgary and virtually throughout Alberta and British Columbia. If this resonates with you, I invite you to book a complimentary consultation to explore whether we might be a good fit.

Supporting Meaningful Change
People often come to therapy when something feels stuck, overwhelming, or out of alignment—within themselves, in their relationships, or in the systems they are part of. My role is to help you make sense of what is happening, develop practical skills, and move toward meaningful, sustainable change.

At Braveheart Counselling & Mediation, I work with adults, couples, and families across a range of concerns. Much of the work focuses on relational patterns, emotional regulation, identity development, and navigating significant life transitions.
Below are some of the areas I commonly support clients with.
Areas of Focus
Trauma, Stress & High-Demand Roles
I work with individuals in high-stress, high-stakes roles—including first responders and healthcare professionals—as well as their partners and families. Support often focuses on cumulative operational stress, critical incidents, moral injury, and the relational strain that can accompany these demands.
Our work focuses on restoring steadiness and agency while understanding how stress responses unfold over time.
Common areas include:
Operational stress • Critical incidents • Moral injury • Burnout • Trauma recovery
Neurodivergence & Neurodiversity
I work with adults and older adolescents who identify as neurodivergent, including those with ADHD or autism, as well as individuals exploring this possibility later in life.
Therapy focuses on understanding how your nervous system functions, reducing shame, building self-trust, and developing strategies that fit you rather than forcing you into neurotypical expectations.
Common areas include:
ADHD • Autism • Burnout • Identity integration • Executive functioning
Relationship & Communication Difficulties
I support individuals, couples, and families experiencing communication breakdowns, recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, or infidelity.
Our work focuses on understanding interactional patterns, strengthening emotional regulation and co-regulation, and developing clearer and more constructive ways of relating.

Common areas include:
Couples conflict • Relational repair • Infidelity repair • Boundary challenges • Family-of-origin patterns • Co-parenting
Identity Exploration & Life Transitions
Periods of change often raise important questions about identity, values, roles, and direction. Therapy can support transitions such as career shifts, separation or divorce, parenting changes, or midlife reflection.
The focus is on moving forward with greater clarity, stability, and purpose.
Common areas include:
Life transitions • Career direction • Separation & divorce • Parenting transitions • Meaning & purpose
Anxiety & Emotional Overwhelm
Anxiety often appears as chronic worry, rumination, avoidance, or emotional reactivity. Therapy focuses on increasing psychological flexibility, improving emotional regulation, and reducing the impact anxiety has on daily life.
The goal is learning to respond to anxiety with greater flexibility rather than being driven by it.

Common areas include:
Chronic worry • Emotional reactivity • Overthinking • Stress management • Burnout

Family Systems & Co-Parenting Challenges
For families and co-parents, I work systemically, attending to roles, boundaries, communication patterns, and the needs of children within the family structure.
Sessions may involve individuals, co-parents together, or family members in varying configurations depending on the goals of the work.

Common areas include:
Co-parenting • Separation support • Family conflict • Parenting alignment • Blended families
